François Rilhac was a French jazz pianist. He learned jazz at very young age, as an autodidact within a brotherhood of musicians. At 17, he perfectly mastered the language of bebop and already played in smalls orchestras in Paris. At the same time, he took piano lessons with Claude Bolling. Later, he was hired in Jean-Lou Longnon's big band, and worked regularly with Marcel Zanini. Subsequently, and contrary to his musical training, François became interested in the stride piano style and the virtuoso pianists of this era such as Donald Lambert or Art Tatum. He met Louis Mazetier in the early 1980s with whom he formed one of the most dazzling stride piano duos at that time. His career ended suddenly after he died tragically at the age of 32.
A true prodigy of jazz piano, François Rilhac left his mark on an entire generation of musicians through the vistuosity of his playing, the authenticity of his swing and his perfect understanding of all kind of jazz. He was particularly capable of improvising very fast melodic lines with his right hand, supported by a strong and precise left hand.
