Joe Turner
1907–1990
Joe Turner was an stride born in Baltimore. He moved to New York in the 1920s and became acquainted with leading Harlem pianists, notably James P. Johnson and Fats Waller. He soon established a strong reputation and also worked as an accompanist for singers and orchestras. After World War II, Turner developed an international career and spent many years in Europe, particularly in France, where he helped keep the stride piano tradition alive.
Less overtly virtuosic than Art Tatum, Turner favored clarity, elegance, and rhythmic drive. His style retained the energy and momentum of classic stride while giving considerable space to melody and spontaneous improvisation.
