Ralph Sutton

1922 - 2001

Ralph Sutton stride piano
Ralph Sutton is one of the most worthy representatives of post-war stride piano, alongside Dick Wellstood, Dick Hyman, and Don Ewell. He began his career in the 1940s, playing with eminent musicians such as Jack Teagarden, Benny Goodman, and Louis Armstrong. Over the decades, he recorded numerous albums solo and in collaboration with other artists.

Ralph Sutton was renowned for his stride style, as well as his technical mastery of the instrument. His electrifying swing, the inventiveness of his improvisations, and above all, the power and clarity of his playing make Ralph Sutton one of the most honorable heirs to Fats Waller.
