Dave McKenna at the piano
Dave McKenna, a native of Rhode Island, is renowned for his immense mastery of the solo piano. After an early start in local groups, he played in the 1950s and 60s with Charlie Ventura, Woody Herman, Stan Getz, and Zoot Sims. From the 1970s onward, he became a major figure on the Boston scene and recorded numerous albums for Concord Jazz, where he established his unique style. Although a sought-after accompanist, it was on the solo piano that McKenna truly found his full expression. He leaves behind a discography respected by musicians and music lovers alike.

McKenna is the master of three-handed swing: a left hand providing a fluid and steady walking bass, a right hand that blends melody and internal harmonies, and a naturally stable swing. His playing creates the illusion of a full trio, with warmth, richness, and consistently clear musicality.
