Dick Wellstood
1927 - 1987
Originally from Connecticut, Dick Wellstood was self-taught in ragtime,
stride piano and
boogie woogie. During his career, he accompanied great names in jazz such as Bob Wilbur, Sidney Bechet, Red Allen and Roy Eldrige. He remains strongly associated with
stride piano, a style of which he was one of the great specialists after the World War II, alongside
Dick Hyman,
Ralph Sutton and
Don Ewell. With a playing that was sometimes incisive, sometimes nuanced, he had a very personal approach in the interpretation of standards.
